About this spot
A symbol of Iga City, Mie Prefecture, Iga Ueno Castle (also known as Hakuho-jo) is perfect not only for history fans but also for those who want to enjoy a weekend stroll. The biggest highlight is the "tall stone walls" built by Todo Takatora, a master castle builder. About 30 meters high, they rank alongside Osaka Castle as among the tallest in Japan. The thrill of looking down at the moat from atop the stone walls is something you can only experience here. The current main keep was rebuilt in wood in the early Showa period, and inside are displayed armor and calligraphy and paintings associated with the Todo family. The view of the Iga Basin from the three-story keep is especially superb. Ueno Park surrounding the castle has also been selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots, charming visitors with cherry blossoms in spring and autumn foliage in fall. Nearby are the "Iga-ryu Ninja Museum" and the "Haiseiden," where you can also learn about the history of the ninja and the culture of Matsuo Basho. It is within walking distance of the station and easy to reach, so whether you explore history alone or head out with family or friends, you are sure to have a fulfilling day. Why not feel the historical romance of Iga along with the atmosphere of the castle town?
