ABOUT
About this spot
Just a block off Naha's main thoroughfare, Kokusai-dori, Daiichi Makishi Public Market is a symbol of Okinawan food culture that dates back to the postwar years. Rebuilt and reopened as a new market in 2023, it feels clean and modern while keeping its lively, old-fashioned bustle. It is a classic stop that no Okinawa trip should miss. On the first floor, the fresh fish section displays colorful catches from the waters around Okinawa, such as irabucha (blue parrotfish) and yakogai (great green turban shells), while the meat section features ingredients rarely seen on the mainland, like chiragaa (pig's face). Simply walking through feels like an expedition. The biggest highlight is a system called "mochiage" (carry-up): you buy fresh seafood on the first floor, take it up to a restaurant on the second floor, and have it prepared as sashimi, a simmered dish, or however you like. The second floor is a dining area with plenty of Okinawan favorites such as soki soba and goya champuru. Whether you are having a casual solo lunch or a lively meal with friends and family, it is a place to enjoy delicious food while soaking up the everyday energy of Okinawa.
