ABOUT
About this spot
Cape Hedo, at the northernmost tip of the main island of Okinawa in Kunigami Village, is a dynamic scenic spot where you can feel the raw power of nature with all five senses. Rough waves from the Pacific Ocean and the East China Sea crash against sheer cliffs of uplifted coral reef, a spectacular sight and a majestic landscape unlike Okinawa's calm beaches. On clear days you can see all the way to Yoron Island and Okinoerabu Island in Kagoshima, about 22 km away, and you will be surprised by how close they are. Walking paths run through the cape, and monuments of historical significance are scattered about, including the Monument to the Struggle for Reversion to the Homeland, built to commemorate Okinawa's return to Japan in 1972. It suits a quiet solo moment gazing at the sea, as well as a drive destination with family or friends. Nearby is also the giant Okinawa rail-shaped Yanbaru Kuina Observatory, which makes for fun, unusual photos. Why not spend a luxurious time unique to Japan's northernmost spot of Okinawa, wrapped in overwhelming openness and sea breezes?
