ABOUT

About this spot

Located in the center of Tamba-Sasayama City, Sasayama Castle was built in 1609 by Tokugawa Ieyasu to surround the Toyotomi clan, and is a historically important castle built under the tenka bushin system of national construction projects. Although its buildings no longer survive, its sturdy stone walls and wide moats still convey its original grandeur. The biggest attraction is the Great Hall (Okushoin), faithfully reconstructed in wood in 2000. This large single-story wooden building has well-worth-seeing exhibits for learning about history. The tatami-floored space, which you enter after removing your shoes, has a nostalgic, calming atmosphere where families and older visitors can relax. The area around the castle ruins is also famous as one of the prefecture's best cherry blossom spots, with about 1,000 cherry trees blooming around the moat in spring. You might wander the stone walls alone with a camera in hand, or stroll with friends after enjoying black bean sweets in the castle town. Why not spend a luxurious weekend at this place where the rich nature of Tamba meets weighty history?
