ABOUT
About this spot
Ako Castle in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, is a flatland castle of irregular ring-style design built in the Edo period, and is known nationwide as the setting of the Chushingura (Ako Gishi) story. Its castle layout, which gathers the finest of the military science of the day, is extremely rare, and as an important relic in castle history it is counted among Japan's 100 Famous Castles. The vast grounds include the restored and stately Honmaru Gate and the beautiful Honmaru Garden and Ninomaru Garden, both designated Places of Scenic Beauty. With well-kept walking paths, it is ideal for a leisurely stroll with family or friends, reflecting on history. In spring especially, cherry blossoms bloom and the contrast between the castle's white walls and the pink petals creates a stunning view, making it a very popular photo spot. Nearby are Oishi Shrine, associated with the Ako Gishi, and the history museum, so you can spend a whole day savoring the history of Ako. With easy access within walking distance of the station, it is also a nice spot for a relaxed solo trip. Feel the sea breeze and visit this symbol of Ako, where the charm of Edo still lives on.
