ABOUT

About this spot

Close to Kobe's waterfront, Nankinmachi is one of Japan's three great Chinatowns, ranked alongside Yokohama and Nagasaki. In an area about 270 m east to west and 110 m north to south, more than 100 shops are packed together, including authentic Chinese restaurants, dim sum stalls and unique variety shops. Step inside and you will feel the energy of having wandered onto a street corner in China. The biggest highlight is the lively street-food scene. The appeal lies in easily sampling a wide variety of food, such as long-established pork buns, piping hot xiaolongbao and Peking duck rolls. The red pavilion in the central Nankinmachi Square is popular as a perfect photo spot. It is great for a weekend food crawl with friends, and also ideal as a lunch spot for dates and family trips. At night, lanterns are lit and the atmosphere takes on a magical quality different from daytime. Visiting during colorful seasonal events such as the Spring Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival is also recommended. Be sure to enjoy this food entertainment area where Kobe's history and culture live on.
