ABOUT
About this spot
Standing tall in Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture, Himeji Castle is also called "Shirasagi-jo" (White Egret Castle) for its beauty, and in 1993 it became the first historic structure in Japan to be inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its pure white outer walls, resembling an egret with outstretched wings, and the artful combination of its intricate roofs overwhelm all who see them. Inside the castle, you can get up close to relics that gather the finest architectural techniques of the time, including the surviving main keep, the smaller keeps and the connecting corridor towers. There are many steep staircases inside, so we recommend wearing comfortable clothing and shoes. From the top floor you can take in the whole of Himeji City, experiencing the grand view the castle lords once saw. In spring, about 1,000 cherry trees bloom, befitting its status as one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots, and in the evening you can enjoy its fantastical illuminated appearance. Whether you are a history fan, a photography lover, a family or a solo traveler, this is a national treasure that Japan is proud of.
