ABOUT
About this spot
Located in the center of Akashi City, Hyogo Prefecture, "Akashi Castle" is a hirayamajiro built by order of the Edo shogunate as a safeguard against the western domains. Its greatest highlights are the "Tatsumi Yagura" and the "Hitsujisaru Yagura," two of only 12 surviving three-story turrets in Japan. Retaining their beautiful white appearance, these turrets are designated Important Cultural Properties, letting you feel the breath of history up close. The vast "Akashi Park" surrounding the castle is a perfect spot for weekend strolls and a refreshing break. In spring, about 1,400 cherry trees color the park in a magnificent display, and it has been selected as one of "Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots." History buffs will also appreciate remains scattered around, such as the site of the "Jumoku Yashiki," said to have been designed with the involvement of Miyamoto Musashi. From atop the stone walls on the elevated ground, you can enjoy superb photo opportunities with views over Akashi's cityscape and as far as the distant Akashi Kaikyo Bridge. With excellent access, just a 5-minute walk from JR Akashi Station, there are also shopping streets nearby where you can try the local specialty "Akashi-yaki (tamago-yaki)." You can enjoy a fulfilling holiday, savoring local food after a historical stroll. Whether you quietly trace history on a solo trip or have a picnic in the park with family and friends, it is an appealing sightseeing spot where people of every generation, from 18 to 60, can find their own way to enjoy it.
