Yurigahama Beach

A "phantom white sandbar" appearing offshore of Yoron Island, the southernmost point of Kagoshima Prefecture. The mysterious sight that emerges only at low tide and the crystal-clear emerald-green sea are truly spectacular.

ABOUT

About this spot

Yurigahama appears only at low tide from spring to summer, about 1.5 km offshore from Ogane-ku Beach on Yoron Island, Kagoshima Prefecture. The sight of a pure white sandbar floating out of the transparent emerald-green sea as far as the eye can see, a mysterious beauty that seems not of Japan, truly deserves its name "phantom beach." There is also a lovely legend that if you pick as many "star sand" grains as your age at Yurigahama, you will be happy, and it is very popular as a spot for girls' trips and couples' dates. Surrounded 360 degrees by clear sea, with luck you may even encounter sea turtles in the shallows. Time spent listening to the sound of the waves and forgetting the bustle of everyday life is pure bliss. The usual way to get there is by glass-bottom boat from Ogane-ku Beach. Enjoying the beautiful coral reefs and tropical fish through the boat's glass bottom, you reach this miraculous place in only about 15 minutes. Because the time and shape of its appearance differ each day depending on tides and wind, we recommend checking the "appearance forecast calendar" in advance. Come and experience this paradise of Japan that you should see at least once in your life.
