ABOUT
About this spot
Cape Sata, at the tip of the Osumi Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture, is the southernmost cape on the main island of Japan, lying on the 31st parallel north. Pass through a promenade lined with subtropical plants such as the cycads typical of the south, and a blue ocean opens before you where the Pacific Ocean, East China Sea and Kagoshima Bay meet. When the weather cooperates, the observation deck offers panoramic views of islands such as Tanegashima, Yakushima and even Iojima, and the beautiful sight of the Sata Misaki Lighthouse, one of Japan's oldest, floating by the sea is a must-see. In 2018 the area around the observation deck was fully renovated and a barrier-free promenade was also built. Partway along the promenade is Misaki Shrine, known for blessings for finding a match, making this a popular spot for couples and solo travelers too. It is recommended for those who want to leave the bustle of the city and feel the powerful wind and energy of nature at Japan's southernmost point. When you visit, be sure to get a "Certificate of Arrival at the Southernmost Point of the Mainland" at the Concierge Center to keep as a memory of your trip.
