ABOUT
About this spot
The Chiran Peace Museum for Kamikaze Pilots in Minamikyushu City, Kagoshima Prefecture, was built on the site of a former army airfield to convey the preciousness of peace. It exhibits many belongings, portraits, and final messages to families of the "special attack pilots" who, during the Battle of Okinawa at the end of World War II, flew bomb-laden aircraft into enemy ships. The farewell letters of the young pilots, written in earnest hands and lined up in the exhibition rooms, resonate deeply with visitors. The museum also has real exhibits, such as a Zero fighter (Type 0 carrier fighter) recovered from the sea and a restored Type 4 fighter (Hayate), allowing you to learn the historical circumstances of the time visually. On the grounds, the "triangular barracks" where the pilots spent their final days has also been restored, and you can offer prayers for peace in the quiet air. This place, which offers a chance to reflect again on the weight of life and the blessing of peace, is an important site in Kagoshima that we hope families, solo travelers, and students who will lead the next generation will visit at least once.
