ABOUT
About this spot
Kirishima Onsen-kyo is the collective name for a wide range of hot spring areas, large and small, scattered across an expansive zone at elevations of 600 to 850 m. Distinctive onsen such as Iozani, Maruo, and Hayashida line the area, and steam rising from all around the town evokes classic hot spring charm. Its greatest appeal is the variety of spring qualities and the abundant flow of water. Some inns offer strongly sulfurous, milky white waters, while others have simple springs known as beautifying baths, so you can hop between baths to suit your taste. The area is also familiar as a place visited by Sakamoto Ryoma, a hero of the late Edo period, and his wife Oryo on what is said to be Japan's first honeymoon trip. At the "Kirishima Onsen Market" in the center, you can enjoy eggs and vegetables steamed with hot spring steam as well as local manju buns, making it a perfect rest stop between sights. Kirishima Jingu Shrine, a renowned power spot, and many viewpoints overlooking vast natural scenery lie nearby, offering a special time to forget everyday life and refresh body and mind, whether you travel with family or alone.
