ABOUT
About this spot
Tenmonkan, in central Kagoshima City, is a lively downtown district that is the largest in southern Kyushu. Its name comes from the history of Shimazu Shigehide setting up an astronomical observatory, the "Meijikan" (also called Tenmonkan), in the Edo period. The vast arcade streets concentrate the best of Kagoshima's food. In addition to the famous "kurobuta (black pork) shabu-shabu" and "Kagoshima ramen," there are renowned restaurants to satisfy foodies, including the original shop of the shaved-ice masterpiece "Shirokuma." Thanks to the arcades, you can enjoy shopping and dining comfortably without getting wet even on rainy days. During the day it bustles with people shopping and cafe-hopping, and at night izakaya and bars serving local "imo shochu" light up, showing a different face. From a casual solo stroll to a food tour with friends or a date, it is an area where you can fully experience Kagoshima's energy and culture in any situation. It continues to be loved both as a base for sightseeing and as a gathering place for locals.
