Yakushima

A mystical island that in 1993 became the first site in Japan to be registered as a World Natural Heritage Site. Its appeal lies in nature on an overwhelming scale, woven from the Jomon Sugi, a cedar thousands of years old, moss-covered forests, and abundant water sources.

ABOUT

About this spot

Wrapped in majestic nature and a mystical atmosphere, Yakushima is a sacred place of longing that you should visit once in your lifetime. Mountains exceeding 1,000 m in elevation rise in the center of the island, and it is also called the "Alps of the Ocean." The biggest highlight is the "Jomon Sugi," which has been alive for thousands of years. The round trip is a grueling trek of about 10 hours, but the emotion of standing before its majestic form is powerful enough to change a visitor's outlook on life. At "Shiratani Unsuikyo," said to be a model for the setting of an animated film, you can enjoy the fantastical scenery of the "Moss Forest," where deep green moss covers everything, and people ranging from beginners to experts can feel the breath of nature. After hiking, you can soothe your tired body at "Hirauchi Kaichu Onsen," a hot spring that wells up at the water's edge, or enjoy local cuisine such as fresh "kubiore mackerel," which are pleasures unique to Yakushima. From soul-searching alone to making memories with close friends and family, a special experience awaits where you can forget everyday life and purify body and mind.
