ABOUT

About this spot

Terukuni Shrine, in the center of Kagoshima City, enshrines Shimazu Nariakira, the 11th lord of the Satsuma domain, who made great contributions to Japan's modernization from the late Edo period through the Meiji Restoration. At the shrine entrance stands a huge white torii gate, a landmark of Kagoshima City, that overwhelms visitors. One highlight is the beautifully trimmed "Nariakira-ko no Matsu" (a Japanese podocarp, or inumaki) in the precincts. Its graceful branches are likened to a crane about to take flight and are well worth seeing. The grounds also have a bronze statue of Nariakira, letting you touch Kagoshima's rich history and culture. Though conveniently within walking distance of the downtown Tenmonkan district, the grounds are wrapped in a quiet, solemn atmosphere, ideal for a peaceful solo visit as well as a sightseeing route with friends or family. At New Year and during the "Rokugatsu-do" summer festival, the shrine bustles with worshippers, and you can sense how much it is a spiritual home to the people of Kagoshima.
