ABOUT
About this spot
The Saigo Takamori Statue in central Kagoshima City is a spot symbolizing Saigo Takamori, a key figure in the Meiji Restoration. Made over eight years by Ando Teru, a sculptor from Kagoshima City, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his death, it stands about 8 meters tall, and its majestic presence is spectacular. While the statue of Saigo in Ueno, Tokyo, shows a friendly figure in a yukata with a dog, this one shows a dignified figure in the full dress uniform of an army general. The contrast with the greenery of Mt. Shiroyama behind is beautiful, making it a photo spot that is sure to look great. Across the road is a designated "photo spot," where you can also take commemorative photos with the statue of Saigo's beloved dog, Tsun. Nearby are the "Site of Saigo Takamori's Final Moments" and art museums where you can learn about Kagoshima's history in depth, making it an ideal base for historical walks. Whether immersing in history on a solo trip or taking the classic photo with family or friends, we recommend it. When you visit Kagoshima, why not say hello to Saigo-san here first?
