ABOUT
About this spot
Sengan-en is a vast daimyo garden built in 1658 by Shimazu Mitsuhisa, lord of the Satsuma domain. The top highlight is the garden's overwhelming scale of "borrowed scenery," in which Kagoshima Bay spreading before you serves as the "pond" and majestic Sakurajima as the "artificial hill." Seasonal flowers bloom, and every view looks like a painting. In the garden, the "Goten" mansion where successive Shimazu lords lived retains its original appearance, and as you tour its dignified rooms and beautiful courtyards, you can imagine the splendid life of the time. The neighboring Shoko Shuseikan is a museum telling the history of the factories that supported Japan's modernization, and it is a component of the World Heritage "Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution." It is ideal for a girls' trip with friends, a family trip, or a solo trip to learn history in depth. Between strolls you can taste the local specialty "jambo-mochi" or watch the exquisite craftsmanship of Satsuma kiriko glass at the neighboring factory, enjoying Kagoshima's culture with all five senses. It is a must-see in Kagoshima where you can spend a luxurious time in harmony of history and nature.
