About this spot
Shioyazaki Lighthouse, towering over the coastline of Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture, is a sightseeing landmark symbolizing Iwaki, with a striking pure white tower. This historic lighthouse began operating in 1899, and climbing its interior spiral staircase (99 steps) opens up a 360-degree view of the Pacific as far as the eye can see. The contrast between the cobalt blue sea seen from the observation deck and white waves crashing against the sheer cliffs is truly stunning. The area is also known as the setting of Misora Hibari's hit song "Midaregami," and a song monument stands at the foot of the lighthouse, where the melody drifting with the sound of the waves evokes deep feeling. Having overcome the Great East Japan Earthquake and still watching over the safety of the sea, it is also loved by many as a symbol of recovery. It is perfect for those seeking soul-cleansing views, whether on a weekend drive, a girls' trip, or a quiet solo moment. The shop at the base also offers local specialties, making it a good rest stop during sightseeing.
