ABOUT
About this spot
Nanko Park in Shirakawa City, Fukushima Prefecture, is said to be Japan's oldest park, built in 1801 by Matsudaira Sadanobu, lord of the Shirakawa domain, under the philosophy of "shimin kyoraku" (a place enjoyed by all regardless of status). It is also a National Historic Site and Place of Scenic Beauty, a sign of its high historical value. The park has about 2 km of walking paths around the lake, and you can enjoy beautiful scenery throughout the year: about 800 cherry trees in spring, greenery in summer, vivid autumn foliage and snowscapes in winter. In particular, at "Suirakuen," an authentic Japanese garden on the lakeshore, you can spend a calm time away from everyday life, enjoying matcha and seasonal Japanese sweets in a tea room associated with Matsudaira Sadanobu. When you visit Nanko, the famous "Nanko dango" is not to be missed. Each teahouse on the lakeshore offers a different flavor, perfect for a rest between strolls. Whether a family outing, a date or a quiet solo walk, it is Shirakawa's leading sightseeing spot, where a wide range of generations can relax and enjoy.
