ABOUT
About this spot
Shirakawa Komine Castle in Shirakawa City, Fukushima Prefecture, is a historic spot featuring a three-story turret faithfully restored in wood based on Edo-period drawings. Together with Morioka Castle and Wakamatsu Castle, it is counted among the "Three Famous Castles of Tohoku" and has been selected as one of Japan's 100 Famous Castles. The highlight is, above all, the beautiful stone walls that made a remarkable recovery from the damage of the Great East Japan Earthquake. You can closely observe the advanced techniques of the time, such as "nozurazumi" and "uchikomi-hagi," which are rare across Japan. The interior of the three-story turret is open to the public, and if you climb the steep stairs to the top floor, you can enjoy 360-degree panoramic views of Shirakawa city. The castle park is rich in nature of each season too, known as a spot for cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in fall. With a spacious lawn plaza, it is perfect for a family picnic or a leisurely solo historical stroll. For history lovers, and as a walking course after enjoying Shirakawa ramen, why not pay a visit?
