ABOUT

About this spot

Aizu Sazaedo, standing on Mt. Iimori in Aizuwakamatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture, is a one-of-a-kind building in the world that surprises you the moment you step inside. Its official name is "Entsu Sansodo," and as the name suggests, it has a spiral shape like a turban shell (sazae). Its greatest feature is the double-helix ramp inside, in which the way up and the way down are completely separated. This rational mechanism, which lets worshippers visit without passing along the same path, is even said to resemble a design by Leonardo da Vinci. Walking through this original structure full of Edo-period wisdom, you will feel a mysterious sensation as if you had time-traveled. The surrounding Mt. Iimori has many places connected to the Byakkotai, making it essential for a historical tour. With its photogenic exterior and steeply sloped floors that convey the warmth of wood, it is recommended for trips with family and friends as well as for solo travelers who want to savor architectural beauty. If you visit Aizuwakamatsu, it is a historic mystery spot you should stop by at least once.
