ABOUT

About this spot

Higashiyama Onsen, quietly nestled in the mountains only about 10 minutes by car from central Aizuwakamatsu, is a historic hot spring resort said to have been discovered about 1,300 years ago by a monk named Gyoki. Inns line the Yukawa stream, and at night the lights from the buildings reflect on the water, creating a fantastical atmosphere reminiscent of the Taisho Romance era. This is also known as the place where Hijikata Toshizo of the Shinsengumi healed his battle wounds, and it was loved by many writers and artists such as Takehisa Yumeji and Yosano Akiko. The water is a smooth "sulfate spring," known for its silky feel. Beauty benefits and relief from fatigue can be expected, making it ideal for resetting from daily exhaustion. The hot spring town has free foot baths and a nostalgic shooting gallery, and the real pleasure is strolling in yukata, clacking geta sandals. A short trip away are historic sites such as Tsuruga Castle (Wakamatsu Castle), recommended for history buffs. It is a famous spring that suits every travel style: soaking quietly on a solo trip, or enjoying a lively time with family or friends over local dishes such as "dengaku" and "sauce katsudon."
