Ouchi-juku conveys the look of an Edo-period post town to this day. The scenery of thatched-roof houses in a row gives you the feeling of time-traveling. The famous "negi soba" is a must-eat too.

ABOUT

About this spot

Ouchi-juku, in Shimogo Town, Fukushima Prefecture, flourished in the Edo period as a post town on the Shimotsuke Kaido road connecting Aizuwakamatsu and Nikko. Today, as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, more than 30 thatched-roof houses are carefully preserved. Along the road, souvenir shops and restaurants stand side by side, and the famous "Takato soba (negi soba)" is a must. The unique style of eating it using a single green onion instead of chopsticks makes a perfect travel memory. Also, if you climb the small hill at the end of the village, there is a superb photo spot from which you can see the whole post town. You climb rather steep stairs, but the view from there is spectacular. Another charm is that it shows completely different faces in each season: cherry blossoms in spring, green in summer, autumn leaves in fall, and fantastical snowscapes in winter. We highly recommend this sightseeing spot to those who want to leave the bustle of the city and spend relaxed time in the original landscape of old Japan.
