ABOUT
About this spot
Located at Onahama Port in Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture, "Aquamarine Fukushima" is an environmental aquarium themed around the "Shiome" (the boundary between the Oyashio and Kuroshio currents), a defining feature of Fukushima's sea. The main highlight is "Shiome no Umi," in which two enormous tanks are divided by a triangular tunnel. Inside the sunlit main tank, you can watch schools of powerful bonito and sardines swim by up close. The aquarium is also known for its distinctive initiatives, including exhibits of Oyashio creatures such as Pacific saury and research on coelacanths. Outdoors, "Janome Beach," one of the world's largest touch pools where you can go barefoot and interact with sea creatures, is a big hit with families with children. The adjoining Children's Experience Hall also offers fishing and charcoal-grilling experiences, providing lessons about life through food education. From the beautiful glass-walled building you can take in sweeping views of the sea at Onahama, and the open, airy space makes it a great choice for friends and dates alike. It is a leading Tohoku attraction where you can experience Fukushima's rich nature and the connections of life with all five senses.
