ABOUT
About this spot
Tsuruga Castle (Aizuwakamatsu Castle), in the heart of Aizuwakamatsu, is a famous castle worth a visit even if you are not a history buff. Its defining feature is the "red roof tiles," the only ones on a castle keep in Japan. Restored to its appearance at the end of the Edo period, their beauty forms a striking contrast with the white walls. Inside the keep is a museum displaying valuable materials on the history of Aizu and its successive lords. From the observation deck on the top floor, you can enjoy a superb panorama of the entire Aizu Basin. On the grounds is also the "Rinkaku Tea House," said to have been built by Shoan, son of Sen no Rikyu, where you can enjoy authentic tea and feel the breath of history. The changing seasons are another great attraction, with about 1,000 cherry trees blooming in spring and a dreamlike snowscape in winter. The castle is illuminated at night, offering a magical look quite different from the daytime. Immerse yourself in history on a solo trip, or stroll the park with family and friends. Why not spend a special moment here, where the spirit of Aizu still lives on?
