ABOUT

About this spot

Tonohetsuri in Shimogo Town, Fukushima Prefecture, is a dynamic scenic spot designated as a national natural monument. "Hetsuri" is an Aizu dialect word meaning "cliffs pressing close to a river," and as the name suggests, a million years of weathering and erosion have created a mysterious landscape that looks like a row of towers. The highlight is the "Fujimi Bridge," a suspension bridge that lets you cross to the rock wall on the opposite bank. After crossing, you can walk along the inside of the rock face and experience up close the wild yet beautiful forms created by nature. The autumn foliage season is especially wonderful, with vivid leaves set against the white rock face, making it a very popular photo spot. Nearby you will also find Aizu souvenir shops and restaurants serving the famous soba, so it makes for a fulfilling stop for family and friends on a drive or for solo travelers. Because some parts of the path are slippery, we recommend wearing comfortable shoes such as sneakers.
