ABOUT

About this spot

Iizaka Onsen, in northern Fukushima City, is a historic hot spring area counted among the three famous hot springs of Oshu, along with Naruko and Akiu. It is said that Yamato Takeru no Mikoto from Japanese mythology and the haiku master Matsuo Basho of the Edo period both soaked here. The town's greatest feature is its nine public bathhouses scattered around. Among them, the symbolic "Sakkoyu" stands out with its retro exterior that recreates Meiji-era architecture. Iizaka's water is famous nationwide for being "hot," and mingling with locals lets you feel the toji (hot spring healing) culture that has continued since the Edo period. The hot spring town is full of attractions, including free foot baths, restaurants serving the local specialty "Enban Gyoza," and the historic wealthy farmer's residence "Former Horikiri Residence." With easy access, about 20 minutes by train from Fukushima Station, it is ideal for a spontaneous weekend trip or a family stroll. After refreshing in the hot water, why not enjoy a leisurely walk through the town, taking in the scenery along the Suriage River?
