ABOUT
About this spot
Aizu Domain School Nisshinkan in Aizuwakamatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture, is a historic educational facility that faithfully restores the domain school established by the Aizu domain in the Edo period. Known at the time as a top-level educational institution in Japan, it was where the boys of the Byakkotai received teachings in both literary and martial arts. On the vast grounds are the solemn "Taiseiden," the "Suiren Suimen," said to be Japan's oldest pool, and martial arts halls, where you can feel the spirit cherished by the Aizu samurai of the late Edo period. The famous "Juu no Okite" (Code of the Ten), the teaching summed up as "What is not allowed is not allowed," offers much food for thought even for us living today. Adults can take their time viewing the beautiful architectural style of the time and the strict education system, while for families with children, activities such as the archery experience and Akabeko painting experience are very popular. Whether you quietly unravel history alone or experience traditional culture with family and friends, it is a must-see spot in Aizu sightseeing where history and culture are concentrated.
