ABOUT

About this spot

Though it stands among the office buildings of Akasaka, Akasaka Hikawa Shrine wraps you in deep greenery and stillness the moment you step inside. This shrine, with a history of more than 1,000 years, had its present shrine buildings erected on the current site by Tokugawa Yoshimune, the eighth shogun of the Edo shogunate. The buildings, which escaped both earthquake and wartime damage, are a precious Important Cultural Property that conveys their original appearance. The shrine is known for its blessings of matchmaking, and its "En-musubi Mairi" (matchmaking pilgrimage) is so popular that worshippers hoping for good relationships never stop coming. The grounds offer plenty to see and collect, including a great ginkgo tree over 400 years old, a festival float (dashi) that evokes the atmosphere of Edo, and charming "cherry amulets." You can immerse yourself in history quietly on your own, or enjoy a power-spot tour with friends. Between shopping and lunch in the Roppongi and Akasaka area on a weekend, why not enjoy a moment that refreshes the spirit? At this urban oasis, come feel Edo's history and the energy of nature.
