ABOUT
About this spot
Kameido Tenjin Shrine in Koto City, Tokyo, enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, revered as the god of learning. Also called the "Flower Tenjin," it is known as one of Tokyo's finest spots for wisteria, which reaches its peak from late April and has been admired since the Edo period. Step onto the grounds and you are greeted by a beautiful main hall modeled after Dazaifu Tenmangu in Kyushu, along with three red arched bridges spanning the Shinji Pond. The bridges are said to represent the past, present, and future, and crossing them is believed to purify body and mind. From the bridge, you can enjoy a view found nowhere else, where the historic grounds meet Tokyo Skytree, a symbol of modern Tokyo. The shrine also hosts a rich calendar of seasonal events, including the Plum Blossom Festival in January and February, the Wisteria Festival in April, and the Chrysanthemum Festival from late October through November. It is a wonderful place for students praying for exam success, and equally for friends, couples, and families who want to stroll and soak up the atmosphere of old downtown Tokyo. After your visit, stop by the long-established kuzumochi shop near the shrine gate to savor a traditional treat that has been enjoyed since the Edo period.
