ABOUT
About this spot
Towering over Shimabara City in Nagasaki Prefecture, Shimabara Castle was built in the early Edo period by Shigemasa Matsukura. Its magnificent freestanding, tiered-tower keep has five roofs and five stories. The contrast between the white plaster walls and the high-piled stone walls is breathtakingly beautiful. The exhibits inside are very rich, and you can learn about the region's deep history through the "Christian historical materials" that tell of the persecution of Christians, valuable displays on the Shimabara Rebellion, and folk materials from the feudal era. The observation deck on the top floor is a must-see. To the east lies the calm Ariake Sea, and to the west the majestic Mt. Unzen Fugen, offering a 360-degree view of Shimabara's rich nature. The "Shimabara Castle Seven-Man Warlord Troupe" greets visitors in the castle, and changing into a ninja costume for photos is also popular. From solo history lovers to family trips with children, it is a classic Nagasaki sightseeing spot enjoyed by all generations. Seasonal flowers such as cherry blossoms in spring and irises in early summer add further color.
