ABOUT
About this spot
Spectacles Bridge (Megane-bashi), spanning the Nakashima River in Nagasaki City, is Japan's first stone arch bridge, built in 1634. True to its name, the bridge's reflection on the water forms two circles that look just like a pair of glasses, which is how it earned its nickname. Designated a National Important Cultural Property, it is a classic photo spot you cannot miss on a Nagasaki trip. The area around the bridge has been developed as a walking path, and a leisurely stroll along the Nakashima River is recommended. Of special note are the "heart-shaped stones" embedded in the stone embankment walls. Hidden in several places, finding one is said to make "love come true" and "bring happiness," making them very popular with couples and girls' trip groups. At night the bridge is lit up, creating a magical atmosphere different from the daytime. Nearby there are retro cafes, miscellaneous goods shops, and stalls selling Nagasaki's famous "Chirin-chirin Ice," so why not enjoy the scenic Nagasaki charm while grazing on street food? Whether you ponder history alone or take photos of each other with friends, this is a charming spot.
