ABOUT
About this spot
Oura Cathedral, a symbol of Nagasaki, is Japan's oldest wooden Gothic-style church, completed in 1864 at the end of the Edo period. In 1865 it was the stage of the "Discovery of the Hidden Christians," an event called a miracle in Christian history, when hidden Christians who had long concealed their faith revealed themselves. It is a component of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage "Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region," and the building itself is designated a National Treasure. Inside, light streaming through French stained glass more than 140 years old creates a tranquil, fantastical space. Beyond its wonderful architectural style, it is a spot where you can feel the turbulent history Nagasaki has walked. It is recommended both for a solo trip quietly tracing history and for a girls' trip with friends touring beautiful architecture. At the adjacent museum (former Latin Seminary, etc.), you can learn deeply about the history of the people who protected their faith. Combine it with nearby Glover Garden to fully enjoy Nagasaki's exotic atmosphere.
