ABOUT
About this spot
Hirado Castle in Hirado City, Nagasaki Prefecture, also known as Kameoka Castle, is the symbol of Hirado, with a rare location surrounded by the sea on three sides even by national standards. Rebuilt in the Edo period as the residence of the Matsura clan, lords of the Hirado domain, it is known as the only castle in Japan designed according to the Yamaga school of military science. The main attraction is the panoramic view from the keep. You can take in the swift currents of the Hirado Strait, the vermilion Hirado Bridge, and the exotic town of Hirado, all in one open, expansive view. Inside the castle, the museum features an interactive digital exhibition where you can enjoy learning about precious armor and historical materials handed down in the Matsura family. The castle's surroundings are landscaped as Kameoka Park, a perfect photo spot when the cherry blossoms bloom in spring. In recent years it also drew attention as a castle stay facility. From a solo historical stroll to making memories with family, it is a sight we can confidently recommend to a wide range of visitors.
