ABOUT

About this spot

Oranda-zaka (Dutch Slope), in the Higashiyamate area overlooking Nagasaki's harbor, is a cobblestone slope that conveys the exotic atmosphere of the late Edo to Meiji periods. At the time, the people of Nagasaki called all non-Asian foreigners "Oranda-san," and the slope they walked came to be affectionately called "Oranda-zaka." Beautiful Western-style houses such as the "Higashiyamate Jūnibankan" (Higashiyamate No. 12 Mansion) are scattered around the slope, where quiet time flows as if you had time-traveled. On rainy days in particular, the cobblestones get damp and create a unique atmosphere, making it a perfect photo spot. There are many cafes and historic buildings in the area, and a leisurely stroll while feeling the sea breeze is recommended. Whether you ponder history alone or enjoy a romantic atmosphere with someone special, this is a classic walking course that cannot be missed on a Nagasaki trip, alive with history and culture.
