ABOUT
About this spot
Unzen Onsen, located in the center of the Shimabara Peninsula in Nagasaki Prefecture, is one of Japan's foremost hot spring towns, with a history of more than 1,300 years. With the history of being designated Japan's first national park, you can feel the rich nature of the four seasons and the powerful breath of the earth up close. At "Unzen Jigoku," the top sightseeing spot, intense steam vents release the smell of sulfur, and a truly hellish scene spreads out. The well-maintained walking paths are ideal for a stroll, and the "onsen tamago" (hot spring eggs) you can taste along the way and the "ashi-mushi" (foot steaming) experience that lets you feel the geothermal heat with the soles of your feet are also popular. The water is a strongly acidic sulfur spring with high sterilizing effects, also known as beautifying water for the skin. The charming hot spring town has a variety of options, from modern hotels and long-established ryokan to public baths that are easy to use, making it ideal for girls' trips with friends, family trips, or relaxing holidays alone. With autumn foliage and winter rime ice, it holds charms that make you want to return in every season.
