ABOUT
About this spot
Unzen Jigoku in Nagasaki Prefecture, the very symbol of Unzen Onsen, is an overwhelming power spot where you can feel the breath of the earth up close. Step inside and you are greeted by a strong smell of sulfur and billowing white plumes of steam, with boiling water bubbling up everywhere in a dynamic spectacle. More than 30 "hells" are scattered here, including "Oito Jigoku" and "Daikyokan Jigoku," and well-maintained walking paths let you tour them safely. The highlight of the stroll is the famous "onsen tamago" (hot spring egg). Steamed in the hot vapor of the hells, the eggs have a subtle saltiness and concentrated flavor, making them the perfect snack between stops. There is also a "foot steaming" spot where you can feel the earth's heat directly through the soles of your feet, as well as places to rest while gazing at the steam up close. Historically, this was also the sorrowful site of the martyrdom of Christians in the Edo period, giving the place a depth of history that goes beyond ordinary sightseeing. It is ideal for a drive with friends or a family trip, and just as good for a quiet solo walk. Come recharge with the powerful energy of the Earth.
