ABOUT
About this spot
Located in central Yamagata Prefecture, Mt. Gassan is the highest of the Three Mountains of Dewa and has long drawn devotion as a holy site of Shugendo mountain asceticism. Gassan Shrine Honsha stands at the summit, and visitors purify themselves before setting foot there, a rare sacred practice even by national standards. Its overwhelming natural beauty is the real draw. From July to August, more than 350 kinds of delicate alpine flowers are said to bloom, creating a scene worthy of the name "paradise in the sky." Because of the high elevation, snow remains even in summer, and the mountain is nationally famous as a place for summer skiing from April to July. For beginners, a stroll through the Midagahara Marshland at the eighth station is recommended. With its well-maintained boardwalks, you can easily enjoy grand panoramas and seasonal flowers. From serious mountaineering to family hiking and solo power spot visits, this is a famous peak that refreshes the soul with every visit.
