ABOUT
About this spot
Yamagata Castle was built by Shiba Kaneyori, the first head of the Mogami clan, and expanded during the era of Mogami Yoshiaki into a flatland castle of one of the largest scales in Japan. Now beloved by residents as "Kajo Park," it is designated a national historic site and one of Japan's 100 Famous Castles. The park's highlights are the faithfully restored "Ninomaru Higashi Otemon Gate" and "Honmaru Ichimonji Gate." You can feel the advanced stonework and architectural styles of the time up close, a pleasure for history lovers. The park is also dotted with cultural facilities such as the "Mogami Yoshiaki Historical Museum" and the "Yamagata City Local History Museum (former Saiseikan main building)," where you can learn deeply about Yamagata's past. The beauty of the seasons is exceptional too: in spring about 1,500 Somei-Yoshino cherry trees bloom, and the row of cherry trees along the moat is breathtaking. At night there is also illumination, offering fantastical night cherry blossoms. With autumn foliage and winter snowscapes, it shows a different face whenever you visit. The spacious grounds are ideal for strolling, a classic recommended spot for families, friends, or a leisurely solo holiday.
