ABOUT

About this spot

Near the border of Yamagata and Niigata prefectures, stretching along the Atsumi River, Atsumi Onsen is an atmospheric hot spring town with a 1,200-year history. Once visited by many poets and men of letters, it still has a calm, Japanese charm that gently welcomes visitors. There are many ways to enjoy the town. At the three foot baths along the river, you can read or chat leisurely while listening to the murmur of the stream. The "Morning Market," held every day from April to November, is a must-see. Fresh local vegetables, seafood, pickles, and more are lined up, and friendly exchanges with local people are part of the charm. Each season has its own beauty: cherry trees blooming on both banks of the river in spring, sweetfish fishing in summer, vividly colored autumn leaves in fall, and softly falling snow in winter. Whether you mingle with locals at a public bath or feast on lavish seafood at an inn, enjoy a blissful time of true relaxation away from everyday life, whether traveling alone, with family, or as a couple.
