ABOUT
About this spot
Zao Onsen Ski Resort, one of the largest single ski resorts in Japan, is a symbol of winter in Yamagata. The biggest highlight is the "juhyo" (snow monsters), rare even by world standards. The fantastic ice art spread near the summit captivates not only skiers but also sightseers. They are lit up at night too, and the rime-ice forest emerging in the silence is a spectacular view to see at least once in a lifetime. The varied slopes, with 26 courses in all, range from a vast beginners' area to downhill runs for advanced skiers, so families and groups can enjoy a full day, each at their own level. The longest run is about 10 km, and a long cruise with majestic panoramic views is wonderfully refreshing. After skiing or snowboarding, head to the Zao Onsen hot spring town at the foot of the mountain. The strongly acidic sulfur springs are loved as "beauty baths" that make the skin white and smooth, warming tired bodies to the core. With plenty of après-ski pleasures, such as gathering around the local specialty Genghis Khan (grilled lamb), it is a resort ideal for an adult winter vacation.
