ABOUT

About this spot

Located in the heart of Yamagata City, Bunshokan is a historic building restored from the former prefectural office and former prefectural assembly hall built in 1916 (Taisho 5). Its beautiful brick exterior in the English Renaissance style is affectionately known as a Yamagata landmark. Inside, you can tour elegant spaces full of Taisho romance for free, including ceilings with intricate plasterwork showing off craftsmen's skill, the Seicho (main hall) hung with a gorgeous chandelier, and the governor's office of the time. Because of its solid, classic atmosphere, it has also been used as a filming location for works such as the film 'Rurouni Kenshin,' and is very popular as a photo spot. In addition to exhibition corners introducing Yamagata's history and culture, there is a tearoom for a break. It is a classic sightseeing spot we recommend to anyone who wants calm time, whether a weekend stroll, a solo historical exploration, or making memories with friends or family.
