ABOUT
About this spot
Uesugi Shrine in Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture, enshrines the famed Warring States commander Uesugi Kenshin as its deity, and is one of the prefecture's leading power spots. The grounds, built on the former main enclosure of Yonezawa Castle, are wrapped in a calm air that conveys the breath of history and show beautiful faces through the seasons. In spring, more than 200 cherry trees blooming along the moat color the water's surface, and in winter the 'Uesugi Snow Lantern Festival' is held, enveloping the grounds in magical snow lights. At the Keishoden treasure hall on the grounds, you can see up close Naoe Kanetsugu's famous helmet bearing the character 'ai' (love) and many precious Uesugi family relics designated as Important Cultural Properties, a must for history lovers. You can also learn the teachings of Uesugi Yozan, the wise lord famous for the phrase 'Nasebanaru' (where there's a will, there's a way). It suits a wide range of travelers, from adults solo-traveling to strive for work or goals, to families seeking blessings. After your visit, tasting local food such as the famous Yonezawa beef and Yonezawa ramen in the surrounding castle town is also recommended.
