ABOUT
About this spot
Nestled in the folds of Mount Gassan, the sacred peak of Yamagata Prefecture, Yudonosan Shrine has been revered since ancient times as the "inner sanctuary" of the Three Mountains of Dewa. Its most distinctive feature is that, unlike typical shrines, it has no "shrine building." The object of worship is a massive rock itself, stained reddish-brown by hot spring minerals, from which scalding water ceaselessly wells up. Visitors remove their footwear at the entrance, receive a purification rite, and then climb the sacred rock to pray directly, a rare and mystical form of worship that is still preserved today. It has long been a place so sacred that visitors are admonished "neither speak of it nor listen to it," forbidden to speak of what they see in the mountains, and photography remains strictly prohibited. Step inside and you find a solemn atmosphere set apart from the everyday world. It can be visited only from June to early November, but its overwhelming power and purifying sensation leave a deep impression on all who come. For those who want to feel the energy of nature firsthand, or to step away from daily life and refresh body and mind, this is the ultimate power spot, well worth experiencing at least once.
