ABOUT
About this spot
Hojusan Risshaku-ji (Yamadera), a leading Yamagata attraction, is a historic temple founded in 860 by the priest Jikaku Daishi. It is also known as the place where Matsuo Basho composed his famous haiku, 'The stillness: cicada voices seep into the rocks,' and has long drawn devotion. From the foot of the mountain to the Okunoin inner sanctuary, a long path of 1,015 stone steps continues. It may seem daunting, but it is said that worldly desires vanish with each step you climb, and you can go at your own pace while viewing the strange rocks and historic buildings along the way. The view from Godaido Hall, standing on the edge of a cliff, is especially spectacular, and the peaceful rural scenery below is beautiful enough to blow away your fatigue. The temple shows different charms throughout the year: spring cherry blossoms, deep green summer, autumn foliage, and a winter snowscape like an ink painting. After your visit, refueling with the local specialty 'chikara konnyaku' in the temple town is recommended. It is a power spot ideal for a quiet walk with friends, family or alone.
