A group of huge wooden rice warehouses built in the Meiji era. The black-painted buildings lined up along a row of zelkova trees are a symbol of Sakata. Also known as a filming location for the film "Oshin," the scenery through the seasons captivates visitors.

ABOUT

About this spot

Known as a symbol of Sakata in Yamagata Prefecture, Sankyo Soko is a historic group of warehouses built in 1893 (Meiji 26) to store rice. They remained in use as rice warehouses until the end of 2022 and were designated a national historic site in 2021. Their functional beauty and scenic charm are striking. In particular, the row of zelkova trees more than 150 years old planted behind the warehouses serves the practical purposes of blocking the western sun in summer and shielding the buildings from the cold winds of winter, while also making a wonderful promenade that shows a different face in every season. On the grounds is the Sankyo Soko Information Center, which provides sightseeing information, and the site offers a rewarding time for families, friends, and solo travelers alike. * The Shonai Rice History Museum is closed for the time being for building safety checks. In addition, Sakata Yume no Kura closed in February 2025 and has relocated to Iroha-gura Park. As you walk slowly beneath the zelkova trees with sunlight filtering through the leaves, you will sense a nostalgic Showa-retro atmosphere. From sunset until 22:00 the site is also illuminated, offering a dreamy look quite different from daytime. A must-visit photo spot for camera lovers and a landmark well worth visiting as a base for sightseeing in Sakata.
