ABOUT

About this spot

Ryoan-ji is one of Kyoto's World Heritage Sites. Its greatest attraction is the dry landscape rock garden, composed of only white sand and 15 stones in a space of just 75 tsubo. The mysterious design, in which only 14 stones can be seen at a time from any angle, poses various questions to viewers. Sitting on the veranda and quietly facing yourself becomes a blissful moment that makes you forget the bustle of daily life. Besides the rock garden, we also recommend strolling around "Kyoyo-chi" Pond on the spacious grounds. This pond, where nobles are said to have enjoyed boating in the past, shows beautiful seasonal faces, with cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in fall. Whether you lose yourself in quiet contemplation alone or feel the essence of Japanese culture with friends, it is a must-see spot where a wide range of generations, from 18 to their 60s, can experience the deep spirituality of Kyoto.
