ABOUT
About this spot
Located in Kyoto's Higashiyama area, Nanzen-ji is an extremely prestigious Zen temple that was placed above the Five Great Zen Temples of Kyoto in the Muromachi period. The first thing you see on entering the grounds is the giant Sanmon gate, an Important Cultural Property. It is famous as the setting where the outlaw Ishikawa Goemon exclaims "What a magnificent view!" in Kabuki, and climbing to its upper floor rewards you with a panoramic view of Kyoto. Another scene that symbolizes Nanzen-ji is the Suirokaku aqueduct. The red brick arched bridge, built in the Meiji era, appears at first to contrast with the temple atmosphere, but that unique contrast is photogenic and has made it a popular spot where many visitors stop. For quiet time, head to the Hojo, designated a National Treasure. It has beautiful dry landscape gardens such as the "Tiger Cubs Crossing the Water Garden," said to be the work of Kobori Enshu, and sitting on the veranda looking at the garden lets you forget daily bustle. Cherry blossoms in spring, fresh green maples, autumn leaves and snow scenes in winter, the rich nature changes its look throughout the year. A famous temple recommended for all ages, as a stroll with friends, a solo journey of self-discovery or a classic family trip.
