ABOUT

About this spot

Located in Kyoto's Higashiyama area, Yasaka Shrine is known as the head shrine of all Yasaka shrines across Japan and has long been beloved under the nickname "Gion-san." The beautiful vermilion-lacquered "West Tower Gate" is a symbol of the Gion district, and the main hall was designated a National Treasure in 2020 in recognition of its unique "Gion-zukuri" architectural style. The grounds also include "Utsukushigozen-sha," which enshrines a goddess of beauty, and it is a popular power spot with maiko and women who wish for beauty. At night, the many lanterns on the grounds are lit, creating a fantastical atmosphere different from the daytime. Since it is open for worship 24 hours, it is also ideal as an after-dinner stroll route. The adjacent Maruyama Park is also a cherry blossom spot, and it is a classic must-see for first-time visitors to Kyoto, where you can fully enjoy Kyoto's atmosphere through the seasons.
