Amanohashidate

Amanohashidate, one of Japan's Three Scenic Views, is a mystical sandbar about 3.6 km long floating in Miyazu Bay. Its row of roughly 5,400 pine trees looks like a bridge to heaven. Famous for the "matanozoki" upside-down view from the observation decks, it offers walking, cycling and, in summer, swimming. A signature Kyoto sight woven from history and nature.

ABOUT

About this spot

Renowned as one of Japan's Three Scenic Views, Amanohashidate is a superb scenic spot in Miyazu Bay in northern Kyoto Prefecture. Nature spent thousands of years forming this sandbar, about 3.6 km long and covered with some 5,400 pine trees. Its name, meaning "bridge in heaven," comes from its resemblance to a dragon soaring into the sky. There are many ways to enjoy it. Start at an observation deck such as Amanohashidate View Land or Kasamatsu Park. The classic experience here is "matanozoki," peering at the view through your legs. Heaven and earth appear inverted, and the long, narrow line of pines looks like a bridge spanning the sky, a wonderfully strange sensation you should try. You can also walk across the sandbar itself, or cross by rental bicycle with the wind in your face. The route takes about 50 minutes one way on foot (about 20 minutes by bicycle) and passes "Isoshimizu," selected as one of Japan's 100 Exquisite and Well-Conserved Waters, as well as shrines, so you can enjoy power spot visits along the way. In summer, swimming at the crystal-clear beach is also popular. Whether with family and friends or alone, this is a special place to savor the beauty of nature at a leisurely pace, one worth visiting at least once in a lifetime.
